The Green Banana Secret

It’s probably just me getting old, but bananas aint what they used to be. I eat them every day for breakfast, and tend to shop for them a couple of times a week. Most days, those on offer fall into two categories…under-ripe and rotten.

Given this unappetising choice, I always opt of the lesser of two evils…the green under-ripe variety. It turns out I may have been accidentally doing myself a big favour.

According to New York Times Best Seller, The Carb Lovers Diet, green bananas contain a special type of carbohydrate that actually helps you to lose weight. Dubbed ‘resistant starch’, it adds bulk, so helps you feel full for longer.

According to studies, it also switches on your fullness hormones, keeps your blood sugar level steady, and even helps your body burn more calories.

So there you are. It won’t stop me picking yellow bananas, given the choice, but at least I won’t feel so bad for having to go green.

Cocktails By Subscription

There seems little end to the number of possible subscription businesses out there, and here’s another one. Julibox is a subscription service that provides information and materials to make cocktails at home.

Subscribers pay $36 a month for a six-month subscription, which will provide a package containing recipes, spirits and mixers for two different types of cocktail each month. The delivered ingredients are enough to make two of each cocktail and recipients can use their box as a way to entertain guests during a night in.

As we’ve said many times here before, subscription businesses give a continuity and certainty to income. What subscription business could you add to your money making portfolio?

Duncan Bannatyne’s Paper Round

I’ve just read the first couple of chapters of Duncan Bannatyne’s autobiography, and he tells a story there that reveals much about the roots and foundation of success.

When he was a kid, Bannatyne’s family were very poor. There was scarcely enough money for food and clothing, let alone luxuries. So when the young Duncan wanted a bike, it was little surprise that there was no money available to buy one.

Undeterred, he resolved to get a paper round and buy one himself. But when he went into his local newsagent to ask for a job, the lady owner took one look at the scruffy urchin in front of her, and told him there was no work. Duncan suspected this wasn’t true ~ that the owner was put off by his appearance ~ but rather than argue, he did something that not one in a thousand others would.

He set about knocking on doors in the area where he lived, and asked householders whether they would like a newspaper delivered. Over the course of a day or two, he built up a list of around 100 new customers, and then went back to the newsagent with a ready-made round. What could she say? She had to give him a job, and he got his bike.

Despite showing such great entrepreneurial flare, Bannatyne now says this represented his first big mistake in business. That list of 100 new customers was valuable, and he should have sold it to the newsagent, rather than giving it away in exchange for a job!

No matter. What he did showed astonishing enterprise at such a young age.

Reading about that got me thinking about my own childhood. We weren’t well-off either ~ not quite as poverty-stricken as the Bannatynes, but there was certainly no money available for ‘fun stuff’ aside from Christmas and birthdays. So between the ages of about nine and 13, I earned most of my own money on the golf course ~ not by playing golf, but by selling second-hand balls to the players.

Now you might think this is a mundane activity with not much to be learned, but take it from me, many of the elements necessary for success in any business, were present in that early enterprise. I learned about stock, sourcing, pricing, marketing, wholesaling, profit margins, discounts, special offers, negotiation, customer relations, up-selling, win-win deals…and a whole lot more.

Of course I didn’t attach those labels to what I was doing at the time. I was just trying to find and flog as many balls as I could, for as much money as I could get. But when I look back, many of the things I now take to be common knowledge were grounded in that seemingly simple enterprise. Much of what I’ve done subsequently, is just the same stuff, scaled up and adapted.

And I’d have never learned any of that stuff if we’d been ‘comfortable’ and I didn’t need the money.

When I was young, there were times when I bemoaned the fact that I wasn’t born ‘into money’. Watching my own children take advantage of opportunities that I didn’t even realise existed as a child, has given me cause to wonder what it would have been like too. But I now realise that I’d have missed out on so many experiences as well…

And what I’d have gained on the swings, I’d have almost certainly lost on the roundabouts.

I think that’s the same for all of us – irrespective of our backgrounds. Where we start out is important but it’s just that, a starting point. What’s far more important is how we use the positive aspects of where we start out, to get to where we ultimately want to be.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur

The economic downturn seems to have created a whole new category of business person – the reluctant or involuntary entrepreneur. These people are not fired up by a burning desire to go and be their own boss.

No, they have fallen into self employment as a result of not being able to find work (or enough work) in their usual profession. The number of ‘consultants’, ‘freelancers’ and ‘contractors’ has grown rapidly over the past couple of years.

Are you one of these people? If you are, then I think you need to be mindful of ensuring you have the right attitude to prosper in this new arena. The approach you need to take as an employee, is very different from the one you need to take as an entrepreneur.

So even if you’ve been forced down the entrepreneurial route, resolve to fully embrace the attitude and culture. That means learning everything you can about marketing, running and administrating you new enterprise.

There’s a world of difference between being an employee and an entrepreneur, even if you’re doing fundamentally the same job.

Milk Crate Farm

Restaurants across America have hit on a novel idea. Instead of buying in their vegetables from local farms, they’re growing their own on roof top gardens and bits of waste land near to their premises. How do they do that? By planting in old crates?

As you might imagine, I know nothing about growing vegetables at all, let alone the process of growing them in milk crates, but if it can be done in a busy city centre like New York or Los Angeles, it can surely be done pretty much anywhere.

Would it be possible for UK restaurant owners to ‘grow their own’ in this manner? I don’t see why not. Might it be possible for an entrepreneur without land or experience to set up a milk crate farm supplying local restaurants? Very possibly.

This would take a bit more research, but it sounds an interesting idea.

Route Happy!

One thing I always find annoying and frustrating when researching travel plans is the almost universal focus on cheapness and price. I don’t want to over-pay, but I don’t want to be transported like livestock either. I was therefore interested to read about Routehappy, a service aimed at those who want to travel in comfort.

The company has created a database of information about flights around the world, detailing attributes such as seat type, legroom, entertainment options, wifi access, dining and other amenities. Routehappy uses this research to assign a “Happiness Score” for each airline flight. Users can then check to see whether their planned route will provide the facilities they’re after.

Every comparison site you look at today, irrespective of the product or service, focus’s on price. This is unserstandable, because it’s what most people are interested in. But within all product categories, there’s a group who are equally interested in quality, comfort and style. Might there be a demand for a Routehappy-style service in a field you know something about.

Pedal TV

There’s no doudt that child obesity is a growing problem. Goverments are investing a lot of time and resources in coming up with an effective solution. Entrepreneurs like Margie Mullen are thinking about it too.

Margie came up with the idea of the 123GoTV. Marketed through her company, Kidexercise, it’s basically a stationary exercise bike linked up to a TV. If you pedal, you get to see the TV, and if you stop, the screen goes blank.

I’m not sure how well this works in practice. Most homes have more than one TV and kids seem to spend more time on their phones and computers (which also gives access to TV) these days. However, it’s a manifestation of the need to solve the problem which is likely to become a bigger health, economic and social issue over the next decade or so. I think there’s a lot more money to be made for anyone who can meaningfully encourage kids to take more regular exercise.

Exploiting Laziness

People are primarily lazy. I can say that without guilt, knowing that I fall fairly and squarely into that category myself! And many lucrative businesses have been built up which cash in on this common trait.

Ticketbust.com is a US business, set up to help people either get speeding tickets dismissed, or to facilitate a smaller fine. It’s all done through a process called ‘trial by written declaration’ which is clearly offered on the back of every ticket issued.

Every driver could do this for themselves, but few bother. Instead they go to Ticketbust.com and get them to do the job for them. Ticketbust.com now has revenues in excess of $1 Million a year, and all from doing something which their customers could easily do for themselves.

One of the big mistakes I see a lot of would-be entrepreneurs making is discarding iseas and opportunities because they involve doing things that people can do for themselves, or can get done for free with a bit of effort.

The truth is that a significant proportion of any target market won’t do things for themselves and can’t be bothered to make a bit of effort. They’d rather pay someone else to do the job for them. It would be rude for you not to take their money!

Your Personal Car Park

Sometimes, making some extra cash involves nothing more than making use of under-utilised resourses you already have. More than 150,000 people in the UK have made over £3 Million through www.parkatmyhouse.com a website where they can advertise their driveway as a temporary car park.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who lives in the city centre, near a railway station or close to a tourist attraction or sporting venue. In these locations, the option of parking on a private driveway is very attractive compared with the alternative of parking in a public car park with the associated issues of queues, cost, hassle and potential damage.

So if you have a driveway in the right location, why not take a look? It’s free to list your space and everything is organised through the site. You won’t make a fortune doing this, but you won’t have to do any work either.

My Manchester United Debut

I’ve just received a fantastic piece of news. Next week, I’m playing centre forward for Manchester United in a Premiership game. Now I never thought it would come off. I’m the wrong side of 50, not particularly fit and I’ve got two left feet. But I didn’t let that stand in my way. You see, I’ve taken my inspiration from the nation’s schoolchildren.

Let me explain…

Last year, a record 107,000 of them requested, and were granted special help in their GCSE and A level examinations. That’s more than double the number in 2005. These children have been given more time, the use of computers and other aids, in an attempt to help them counteract a whole host of physical and emotional problems including learning disabilities.

I’m not really sure where the line is drawn between someone with learning disabilities, and someone who simply isn’t suited to academic examinations (or ‘duggies’ as they used to be known in my school). But it does seem from the figures, that some parents are increasingly using the system to gain an advantage for their children. We all have differing natural abilities, and I’m sceptical about the logic of discriminating in favour of children who are simply not as academically gifted as others.

When I was at school, I was embarrassingly poor at art. Still am. If there’s an artist’s equivalent of dyslexia, then I almost certainly have it. I’m not exaggerating. My ability in that area has never developed beyond that of a five-year-old. But it never occurred to me (or anyone else) that I should be given special help in examinations. It was just accepted by everyone that I was crap at it – and would be better employed doing something else. And what’s wrong with that?

Pretending that everyone is somehow the same, and should be given special assistance if they appear to be at a disadvantage just seems ridiculous. It flies in the face of the whole natural order of things which dictates that each of us ends up, on the whole, doing pretty much what we’re best suited to do. It sends us down avenues to which we are ill-suited, and diverts us from others in which we might thrive.

Anyway, enough about that. You’re probably wondering how I came to be playing for Manchester United on Saturday…

Well I got myself a trial, and told them I had physical learning disabilities. They were very sympathetic and arranged for the goalkeeper to wear a blindfold and the centre half to have his ankles tied together. They even gave me a little trampoline to use at set pieces. It was brilliant. I scored a hattrick, and now I’m in the team on Saturday.

We’re playing Tottenham . It’ll be fine. Paul Pogba is a bit peed off at being left out, but it’s only fair…isn’t it?

Momentum Magic

For the first dozen or so years that I held a driving licence, I owned nothing but wrecks. I was 30 years old before I paid more than £350 for a car. And I became well-known for the cosmetic appearance of my cars. If someone was having trouble explaining who I was, they’d say something like:

“You know who I mean…drives that white Beetle with the exhaust hanging off that looks like it’s been peppered with a shotgun.”

And immediately a connection would be made…

“I know him…” they’d say, “used to have that bright purple Cortina with the bumpers missing.”

So imagine how exciting it was for me when my boss at the time let me drive his brand new Jaguar XJ6. Several things struck me about the car, compared to what I’d been used to. All the doors opened for a start. So there was no need for the passenger to risk a nasty internal injury scrambling over the gear stick. And all the panels were the same colour. There was nothing on the car that had previously been part of another car that had died or crashed into a lamppost…

And the really exciting thing was that it had a computer. Now this was the first time, I’d seen a computer thar measured fuel consumption – not just average fuel consumption, but ‘instant’ fuel consumption at any one moment in time.

I was shocked by what it told me…

You see, I had a rough idea what the average fuel consumption for that car would be, but what I didn’t realise at all, until then, was what really burned up the petrol like there was no tomorrow. In my simple brain, I’d equated high consumption with ‘going fast’, but that wasn’t it at all. No, what really caused the fuel needle to lurch to the left was acceleration, changing from one speed to another.

Once you got up to speed, maintaining it was a comparatively frugal exercise. But getting there in the first place…that took a lot of energy.

I should have known this of course. Firstly because I’d endured Mr Turner’s painstaking explanation of Newton’s laws of motion in O Level Physics; and secondly, because I had a fair amount of experience of the energy required to push-start a vehicle. I think this is something young people miss out on today. It’s probably becoming a dying skill.

Getting the thing moving is the hard bit. Once it’s underway and up to speed, the burning in your thighs and lungs subsides a bit, and you’re cruising. It takes a lot less energy to maintain the momentum, that it does to build it.

I’m sure you can see where this is heading…

When I was trying to get various projects and businesses off the ground in the early days, it was a bit of a struggle. I’d look at other people operating in the same field and they didn’t seem to be struggling like I was. It seemed easy for them. And yet when I analysed what they were doing, I just couldn’t work out what they had that I didn’t. It’s only with the benefit of hindsight that it became clear.

What they had was momentum.

Whilst I was in an intense ‘acceleration’ period, and hence using an awful lot of energy, they had reached cruising speed and the energy requirements for them were not so great. They were running along with the car already moving, while I was trying to get it away from the mark.

I think this explains why so many people get disheartened and give up in the early stages of a business or money-making project. I hear from people on a regular basis who are not progressing as quickly as they’d like. They see others, seemingly making great strides in an effortless manner, and think they must be missing a vital ingredient ~ one of the secret keys to success.

In truth, all they’re really missing is some momentum. The good news is that anyone can build it – in time. The bad news is that you can’t ‘magic’ it up.

Here’s the thing though ~ once you’ve built momentum, the effort-reward relationship is reversed. Whilst you’re building it, you put more in than you get out. Once you’re maintaining it, you get more out than you put in. The sad thing is that the great majority of people give up before the transition – disillusioned and confused – just at the point that the wheels are about to really start turning.

If any of this is relevant to your situation right now, a spot of objective analysis is needed. Is there really anything wrong with your business – or is it just a case of waiting for the momentum to take hold. Only you can know for sure.

Unhackable Phones

Wealthy people are always concerned about their phones being hacked. And following the news that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman might be behind the compromising of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos’s phone, many will conclude that the latest iPhone just isn’t good enough.

Powerful people are increasingly adopting extensively customised, hyper-secure smartphones that guarantee safety through special software. Politicians, executives and underworld bosses are turning to “unhackable phones” to keep them safe from crooks – and often from the police too.

Though similar in appearance to “bog standard” smartphones, clients pay monthly fees stretching into the thousands to keep special security software running. Spanish manufacturers BQ, for instance, claim its Aquaris X is “impenetrable”.

It has an adjusted Android operating system, coupled with a messaging system called EncroChat, which developers describe as the “electronic equivalent of a conversation between two people in an empty room”. Data can be remotely wiped from the phone and messages can be programmed to self-destruct automatically.

Sanitised Shopping Trolley’s

We appear to be going through a cleanliness fetish phase at the moment – or at least the entrepreneurs we feature are.

Here’s something you didn’t want to know (but I’m going to tell you anyway)… a new study has found that 72% of shopping trolley handles have fecal matter on them. And 50% of trolleys tested also tested positive for E.Coli bacteria. This is in the United States, but I can’t imagine the situation here is any better.

The Americans are already doing something about it, with at least two companies marketing systems which supermarkets can use in-store to clean and sanitise the trolleys before returning them to the front line. These systems are mechanised and quite expensive. They may arrive here eventually (and someone has to negotiate those deals with the supermarkets – why not you?) but in the meantime, it seems to me that is a problem that could easily be tacked manually with some anti-bacterial spray and a cloth.

Here’s my thought. Supermarkets are always looking for an edge over the competition. What if one of them were to publicise the potential issue with germ laden trolley handles, but tell customers there’s no need to worry at Sainsburys because trolleys are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised on site after every use? Might that give them a lead on the competition, and might this idea provide an easy-to-run business providing this valuable service to supermarkets?

Money Statistics

41 – The percentage of people in England aged between 25 and 34 who own their own home, up from the 36% recorded in 2015. However, that figure is still below the 59% which seen in 2004.

315 – The number of new pubs and bars that opened in the UK in 2019, taking the total number to 39,130. It was the first year since the financial crisis that more pubs opened than closed.

$9m – How much Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has promised his 6.8 million Twitter followers in the spirit of a Japanese New Year’s tradition. The one million yen prizes, which have been split into 12 monthly instalments, will also form the basis of an experiment into happiness. The winners will be chosen, at random, in a draw.

£1.5bn – How much Disney’s British-based subsidiaries have spent over the last six years on making the past five Star Wars films. Much of the filming, including that of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, starring British actress Daisy Ridley as Rey, has taken place at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

Virtual Bridge

People are spending an increasing amount of their time online at sites like Facebook and twitter. Much of their social life now takes place in the virtual world, but that doesn’t mean that they’ve dispensed with the physical world (and physical products altogether).

In fact there’s a growing market for products and services which form a link between the on and off line worlds.

Facebook users can already use their online content to make tangible products like mugs, photo albums and notebooks. A recent addition to what’s possible is Social book, which is a hardcopy 8.5”x 11.5” book cataloguing the buyers Facebook history and content.

The need and desire to convert online content into a tangible real-world product is a trend that is likely to grow. So how might you help people to bridge the gap between the real and virtual worlds?

Will the new Conservative government’s first Budget on 11 March abolish inheritance tax (IHT)? The Chancellor said in September that he was mulling significant reforms, but there were no firm proposals in the Conservatives’ election manifesto and he has gone quiet on the matter. The good news, however, is that the pension system now offers a golden opportunity to cut, or even wipe out, a potential liability. Since the pension freedom reforms of 2015, pensions have become a key inheritance-tax planning tool.

This is primarily because, while pension assets bequeathed to your heirs have always been exempt from IHT in most circumstances, the reforms make it much easier to pass on such assets. You’re now entitled to pass on any unspent money in your pension fund – that is any cash you’ve not spent on an annuity or drawn down as income – to the beneficiaries of your choice. If you die before your 75th birthday, your beneficiaries will receive your pension fund with no tax implications at all.

There’s no IHT due and they can withdraw the money in one go or as regular income, with no income tax or capital-gains tax to pay. If you die after age 75, the rules are slightly different. Your beneficiaries will pay income tax at their marginal rate on money they take out of the fund, but there will still be no IHT to pay.

The reforms make pensions really useful for families’ financial planning. You can pass pensions wealth down to your children, and they can pass it on to their own children if they choose not to use it. For these reasons, it makes sense for anyone worried about inheritance tax to consider making full use of pension saving. The more you shift into a pension plan – subject to rules on annual contributions and lifetime savings – the more you’ll be able to pass on with no inheritance-tax consequences.

Do, however, check the terms of your pension. Some older plans include clauses requiring savers to buy an annuity or come with other conditions that reduce their effectiveness from an IHT perspective. Final-salary pension schemes also have less freedom in this regard.

Finally, it could be worth exploiting pensions to work around IHT in another way. You are entitled to set up pension plans for your children, paying in up to £3,600 of contributions a year including tax relief even for non-taxpayers. This can be a useful way to provide them with money and reduce the size of your estate for IHT purposes.

“Many thanks. Thursday OMG Newcastle 5:30. Special Lady WON 50/1. Won £500. “

G B – 7th February 2020

A couple of weeks ago we wrote to you about The Hermes Strategy, a unique approach to horse racing created by Bill Burrows. I’ve reproduced word for word, two emails I received this week from
one of our customers who tried the strategy for the first time just a few days ago.

He just won £1,460 in two days!

Needless to say, he’s pleased!

Now we don’t get 80-1 and 50-1 winners every day (although it looks like we do at the moment!) but because this strategy looks at the whole thing from a VERY unusual angle, long odds winners come along pretty regularly alongside more mundane wins.

It all adds up to a great second income for anyone able to spend 7-10 minutes a day putting the strategy to work
