In 2020, when food and drink writer, Alicia Kennedy, was laid off from her job, she started her own email newsletter.
Writing about food, drink, politics, media and her thoughts about the changing world, Alicia named her newsletter From the Desk of Alicia Kennedy.
That newsletter now has over 20,000 subscribers.
I don’t know if they are all paying subscribers but if they were, she would have 20,000 people paying her either $5 (£4.02 ATOW) per month or $30 (£24.13) a year.
20,000 people paying $5 a month would give her an impressive $100,000 (£80,418) PER MONTH!
This all happened by accident apparently.
At first, Alicia was publishing her newsletter for free and had no intention of charging for it; it wasn’t until she accidentally enabled the ‘paid newsletter button’ that she started to make money.
Alicia uses the Substack system which allows writers to publish their own newsletters, it is like a social media for writers, and it claims that it helps people to grow their own publishing empires.
Substrack has the option to add a pay wall to your content which means that people who want to read your best content, need to subscribe and pay a monthly or yearly fee.
When Alicia accidentally enabled that option, it resulted in her having 400 people instantly subscribe to her newsletter putting $2,000 (£1,608) into her bank – minus any fees that is.
Over the last few years, that number of subscribers has grown from 400 to over 20,000 giving her an incredible monthly income.
Whenever Alicia publishes a new newsletter, it is sent to people as an email and also published online.

Email and online newsletters are nothing new; people have been using them for many years, with many making small fortunes from them.
They are easy to run and easy to get started with.
Depending on how much you charge, you don’t need a lot of subscribers to be making a decent amount of money each month.
When Alicia accidentally set her newsletter to become a paid subscription newsletter, she had 400 people instantly sign up.
Imagine that you had 400 people paying you £5 per month… that would give you a cool £2,000 each month… all for writing and publishing a series of emails.
Imagine that you had 1,000 paying you £5 per month… that would give you a rather decent £5,000 each month.
Would you say no to that?
Imagine that you were like Alicia and had over 20,000 subscribers… how life changing would that be?
Alicia’s story is a perfect example of what is possible today thanks to the online domain.
Her newsletters and writing style may be more appealing over others contributing to her success, but the truth is… she was a person who simply started writing and publishing an email newsletter one day.
I don’t know if she had much in the way of a following to start with, but I do know that she started writing and publishing content and then grew her newsletter into the monster of an income that it is today.
An email and online newsletter is something that can be managed from anywhere in the world and is easy when compared to many other forms of ‘work’.
An email newsletter only needs to be written once whether you have only one reader or 20,000 readers.
That one email newsletter could be written while relaxing in your garden, while on holiday, while watching the television, or while listening to some music in your office.
You write it and publish it… and get paid multiple times for that one newsletter
This is a way to make money that is open to anyone and everyone.
All you need is to get yourself set up… then start writing and publishing regularly.
