There seem to be two types of people – those whose lives are organised and orderly, and those whose lives are in permanent state of disarray. If you are part of the first group, there may be a business to be built by helping those in the second.

Professional organising is the perfect business for people with a flair for neatness and developing systems.  Just had an interesting conversation with our printer who has a friend who’s a chicken farmer. He supplies the big supermarkets, and I’ve often wondered how the farmers make any money given that you can often buy a chicken in Tesco and their competitors for just a few pounds.

Well it turns out margins on chickens are indeed tight, and the farmer makes most of his money from a surprising source – chicken manure. Apparently, chicken poo is a rich source of nitrogen and he’s able to sell both the solid manure and (sorry to be so graphic here) the liquid remnants that are left when the sheds are hosed down.

I’ve asked this question before, but it’s worth thinking about again. Is there some waste product associated with your business which could be sold at a profit? Most people would see chicken poo as something which needs to be disposed of, and there may be a waste product in your business which isn’t getting the attention it deserves.

Don’t think too literally here. For example, in our own business a ‘waste product’ might be enquiries who don’t ever buy from use. But perhaps they could be valuable to someone else. Think about what you have.

Imagine travelling several hundred miles, with a ferry journey thrown in for good measure…just to buy nappies. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it, and yet that’s just what entrepreneurial Poles and Lithuanians are doing, who see half-priced diapers are too good a business opportunity to pass up.

Buy the product in one area, and resell it in another for less money than it’s available for in that area. Simple, but not that easy.

The trick is to be on the spot to take up the offers, and you’ll not always be able to do that. This probably qualifies as one of the strangest businesses we’ve seen recently, but who knows, it might trigger of an idea. Catacombo is a system for putting music into coffins! 

Created in Sweden the system consists of three different parts. Firstly, users create an account through the online CataPlay platform, which connects to Spotify and enables customers to create a playlist for their own coffin or get friends and family to choose the tracks when they’re gone.

The CataTomb is a 4G-enabled gravestone that receives the music from CataPlay and display the current track – along with details and tributes to the deceased through an LCD display. Finally, the music is played into the CataCoffin pretty much for ever. The cost? Around 23,000 Euro’s.

Now I don’t know who’s going to pay this (certainly not someone who’s chosen to be cremated I’d imagine!) but I suppose it gives lie to the phrase, “You can’t take it with you.”

There certainly seems to be a growth in interest in unusual funeral arrangements, and perhaps there’s money to be made by fulfilling unusual wishes. Can’t imagine your complaints department will be kept too busy either! 

Fabulous Fries

Few of us give much thought to the humble French Fry, but Florida based Scott Nelowet spotted an opportunity while on holiday in Amsterdam.

In the United States, fries are seen as filler food, but in Amsterdam there are a number of outlets selling gourmet fries. Neolwet borrowed the idea, and tested it around Florida using a mobile van.

Life Beyond Death

Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, it seems that technology is reaching the stage where people can live after death – in a fashion. 

I just read about an initiative from the MIT Entrepreneurship Programme which collects web chats, blogs, emails and text messages from a deceased person, and then uses complex algorithms and artificial intelligence to create a ‘chatbot’ that represents the persons online persona.

It’s then possible to interact and communicate with this online presence. The idea is to unlock the memories hidden in their online presence, according to the researchers behind the project. 

In the years to come, the amount of social media and other online data left behind by individuals is just going to grow and grow. The MIT project gives a glimpse into what’s possible now. The possibilities for the future are both exciting and terrifying in equal measure.

One thing’s for sure – there are huge profits to be made by those able to harness the available data in the right way.
