This is a fascinating business model and one that could form the basis of a number of profitable businesses in different locations. I suspect like most sane people, you’re not overly concerned by the possibility of an attack by zombies, but that doesn’t mean Omaha based advertising agency Bozell, haven’t had a good idea.

They’ve created a campaign for a local hardware chain focussing on the power tools, cleaners and door locks you’re going to need both during a zombie attack and in the aftermath. Zombie Preparedness was added to the list of store categories on the website alongside the more traditional fastners, power tools and paints.

I’m not sure many people are going to buy products for their zombie defeating qualities, but this kind of thing certainly get bags of free publicity and attention.

If you’re just using straight forward advertising and promotions, perhaps it’s time to start thinking outside the box. Doing something wacky like this could certainly pay big dividends.

Backyard Farmers 

I like the idea of having a nice garden, and I like the idea of growing my own vegetables, but when it comes down to it I never get round to doing anything about it. Here’s a strange thing….a company at the top end of a market, adapting an idea from the bottom end, and making it work.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the concept of the one day sale. A company hire a hall or empty shop unit and hold a one day sale of sports goods, leather goods, jewellery, furniture or something else.

As I look out of the window from where I’m writing this, I can see The Magna Science and Adventure Centre, the largest tourist attraction of its kind in Europe I believe.

You can do all sorts of interesting things in there, but one of the largest queues is at the full size JCB which you can have a go on. I was therefore interested to read about ‘Dig This’, a theme park in Las Vegas based on the construction industry.

Kids on both sides of the Atlantic are fascinated by building sites and heavy machinery. They can’t wait to get in there and give it a try. I think a similar theme park in the UK would find a ready and eager market. Apparently the Las Vegas park cost just $1 Million and is based on a 5 acre site.

Given the money involved this clearly not something for the uncommitted, but I reckon it could be a potential fortune maker for the right person. I understand the parent company behind the concept are looking to franchise out across the states.

Katy Langhorst and Tara Harville-Fry from Danvers, Massachusetts have provided a solution to this problem in their own community by setting up SitterMixer. 

Sitter Mixer organises events at which parents can interview 5-10 potential babysitters with a backdrop of marker-appropriate vendor stalls and refreshments. All the participants are eligible for door prizes and raffles. “The atmosphere is part cocktail party, part speed dating and part job flair,” Langhorst explained. 

Parents and sitters both have to pre-register online. The fee is $39 for parents and $5 for sitters who must be 15 years old or older. The sitters fill out an application form.
