If In Doubt… PROOF It Out!

One of the most powerful ways to sell something is to prove that it does exactly as you claim.

Do you remember those adverts where people would show how sharp electric carving knifes were by cutting tin cans in half, or how strong pens were by stabbing holes in pop cans with them?

They did this to prove how sharp and strong the materials were.

I know what you are thinking, yes, the knife was probably sharp enough to cut right through a tin can, but how sharp was it after?

It might have been blunt and possibly missing teeth right after the stunt, but at the time it was sharp enough to prove the claim and people seeing the knife cut through metal – albeit soft metal at best – did wonders for sales.

The story of Joe Ades, the Gentleman Peeler, is a remarkable one.

Manchester born, Joe started selling vegetable peelers on the streets of New York in 1993, and he sold so many he became a millionaire.

Many people study his sales pitch. It is a sales master class in itself. What he said and how he said it definitely helped him sell more products…

But a while talking to the crowd, Joe was constantly peeling vegetables.

As well as listen to his well crafted and practiced sales patter, they could clearly see how well the peeler worked and that they were peeling vegetables like the proverbial hot knife going through butter.

Many New Yorkers may not have wanted a new vegetable peeler, but when they came across Joe, they walked away with one thanks to a combination of what he said and what they saw happening in front of their own eyes.

He didn’t simply tell people that the potato peelers were sharp… he showed them how sharp they were.

He proved it.

Proof is an incredibly powerful way to convince people to buy because… well it’s true…

If you tell people that something does XYZ and you then show them it doing XYZ… you have proven it!

Who can argue against it?

Once you have shown someone the truth and proven what you claim, then all resistance to buying is removed.

All that is left is simply deciding whether you want something or not.

The only reasons left to not buy are that you don’t want or need it, or cannot afford it that time.

All other objections are removed through proof.

The great thing about 2024 is that you can show proof easily with video.

Anyone can create a video using their smartphone, tablet or webcam; these tools are readily available to us all today. You can easily film yourself doing something.

You can even record yourself using your computer or smartphone, there are software that will record what is happening on your screen.

The biggest problem we have today is that people are more sceptical thanks to CGI movies, AI, sophisticated software like Adobe Photoshop that can easily ‘mock up’ bank statements, and the amount of scams that are around today.

Years ago people would say “I’ll believe in UFOs and aliens when I see them land on the White House lawn”, but if that was to happen today, the first thing people would say is that it is ‘fake CGI’ or ‘photoshopped’.

I’ve even seen those kind of comments on videos shared by NASA taken from the International Space Station.

I kid you not!

People say that they have seen better CGI in movies, and claim that the videos were bad CGI because there were no clouds, or something more absurd such as that there is no actual International Space Station and that mankind has never actually left the Earth’s atmosphere.

Again, I kid you not!

It’s certainly a tricky time for proving claims because even though the ability to prove them is far easier for individuals using the new tools available, people are becoming more sceptical.

I guess the best way is to show the truth, prove what you can, and simply shrug your shoulders at the doubters and sceptics… those people need more help than just proof!

Push & Pull Marketing – Which Works Best In 2024?

Which is best, Push or Pull marketing?

For those of you who don’t know, Push and Pull marketing describes the two main different types of marketing which are:

Push – Using paid advertising, mailings, affiliates, and joint venture partners to send your content directly to potential customers directing them to a specific product page or offer.

Pull – Sharing and publishing free content and information which pulls people into your world.

A great way of differentiating the two is to think of them like this:

Push – You directly educate the customer about your products or services.

Pull – the customer educates themselves by searching for the information they need regarding specific products or services.

Pull marketing is often ‘clothed’ in books, reports, and videos that share valuable information and training about specific topics.

The information in those books, reports, and videos are useful to the person consuming it, but it doesn’t always give away everything, and if it does, it highlights how specialised or labour-intensive the work is leading the consumer to the conclusion that they need to purchase either a product or service to help them.

Some forms of marketing could be considered to be both Push and Pull due to the fact that you can share useful content that is designed to send people to your website by purposely putting it in front of them via email or social media posts.

The other big differences between the two are:

  1. Cost
  2. Speed of results.

There is a correlation between cost and speed of results.

Usually, the Push marketer will see results happening faster, often near instantaneously, through the use of paid marketing methods.

By spending money, the Push marketer can get their product and service details in front of a lot of people quicker which can result in people buying sooner than those relying on Pull marketing.

Push marketing doesn’t necessarily need to be ridiculously costly, but it is usually more costly than Pull marketing.

However, a person can send a load of emails (Push marketing) to potential customers at a cost of pennies, but another person could pay someone to write a series of articles for their website (Pull marketing) at quite a cost to them, so not every example of Push marketing is going to be more expensive than Pull marketing.

Pull marketers can generate profits with a far lower expense giving them a better ROI…but they usually have to wait longer to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

…Push marketing can reach more people faster and so they can enjoy more profits overall.

Selling 3 copies of a £1,000 product through blog posts that cost you nothing to write and publish (Pull marketing) gives you a clear 100% profit of £3,000.

Whereas selling 10 copies of the same £1,000 product with an advertising cost of £1,000 (Push marketing) gives you £9,000 profit.

The ROI may be less, but the profits are substantially more.

The other thing to consider when deciding whether to do Push or Pull marketing is that your time is also a cost.

There is a cost to everything you do in business and you pay that cost with either your money or your time.

You have to decide which of the two you are prepared to lose.

Here’s something else to think about… you can always earn MORE money, but you cannot earn more time.

If you have the money available and you are following a clearly defined plan, then using the money to accelerate your success by using Push marketing, and/or paying people to do certain tasks for you is a good option.

If money is not available then paying with your time is probably the only option to you, but you should consider moving over to paying people to do work for you or run some kind of paid marketing campaigns as soon as you can.

As for which works best in 2024, the jury is still out on that one due to many variables. Here are a few Pros and Cons for both methods.

  • Direct mail is not used as much today and so there is less competition making this form of Push marketing very effective if you hit the right audience. (Push pro.)

  • Online advertising is getting more costly and there are so many people doing it today your adverts can get drowned out by all of the other adverts. (Push con.)

  • Social media has exploded allowing people to share a lot of useful content for free. (Pull pro.)

  • Creating content such as videos and articles can be done with ease on smartphones allowing you to create valuable Pull content fast and for free. (Pull pro.)

  • People are becoming increasingly blind to paid online advertising. Studies show that the average person sees between 5,000 and 10,000 adverts per day with only a quarter or less being relevant to them. It’s not surprising people are becoming blind to them. (Push con.)

  • More and more people are either paying to access ad-free versions of popular platforms or have installed ad-blocking software on their devices to avoid being bombarded by thousands of adverts each day. (Push con.)

  • Virtually every social media platform allows paid advertising that can put your products and services in front of potentially millions of people. (Push con.)

  • AI tools are changing the way people ‘search’ for content and websites could soon have their content ‘pilfered’ by those AI tools sidestepping them completely. (Pull con.)

  • While social media platforms allow users to link to external websites for free, they prefer to keep people on the platform and so they show those links to fewer people. (Pull pro & con.)

  • Running adverts can take time to master and it can cost money testing different adverts. It’s easy to make mistakes if you don’t know what you are doing and many people have lost a lot of money running poorly targeted adverts. (Push con.)

  • Social media allows users to ‘brand’ themselves and become a ‘celebrity’ in their own circles growing a large following of fans. (Pull con.)

While Push marketing is increasingly growing more expensive with fewer people ‘seeing’ adverts, it is still a very viable option for growing your business fast.

It may cost more than Pull marketing, but you can make more profits quicker, especially if you use a sales funnel that has multiple products of varying prices.

At the top of this article, I mentioned that email can be considered as both Push and Pull marketing because you can put your product and service details directly into the hand of potential customers, and you can share useful information that has people wanting to go to your website to discover more.

Email is an incredibly powerful tool which has made a lot of people very wealthy… me included.

Should You Become An Online Bird Dog?

The lyrics are from the 1963 song, ‘Surfin Bird’, by the Trashmen.

The song has regained popularity after featuring in an episode of the popular adult cartoon, ‘Family Guy’.

Here’s the song…

As you can see, it is an ‘interesting’ song, to say the least.

Apparently the lyrics of Surfin Bird is a call to end the unlawful and un-constitutional locking up of minors for flipping the bird to an adult.

During the 1960s, it was illegal for teens to give any adult the middle finger, known at the time as ‘flipping the bird’.

Juveniles were thrown in the cells for this small act and very often they were falsely imprisoned without question just because an adult had claimed that it had happened to them.

It was often used as a way for a Christian fundamentalist to punish a gay child (often their own).

I imagine that it was also used and abused widely to throw people of different ethnicities and cultures into cells as a punishment for being in areas where some of the local white population decided they didn’t want them.

OK, so, why am I telling you this.

A Bird Dog is a person that earns a finder’s fee whenever they pass on the details of a potential customer to a another person.

Traditionally a Bird Dog would send the details of a dilapidated and rundown property they believe the owner would sell for a decent price, to a property developer.

The term Bird Dog comes from hunting dogs which would run into the fields and forests to find the birds that were shot out of the air by the hunters.

Some would fetch the kill whereas others, to avoid mangling the dead bird more than they were, would stand and point at the kill for the hunter to pick up.

The online world has made it a lot easier for people to become a Bird Dog.

It is far easier to conduct research and communicate with people from all over the world.

And you no longer need to just find dilapidated properties, either.

The other week I was talking to someone who was telling me how a few years ago they were approached by a friend who worked at a local school informing them to directly apply for a job at the same school instead of doing it through the agency she had just signed up for.

The reason she was told to apply directly was that it meant that if she was successful and was offered the job, the school did not have to pay the agency £2,000 in finder’s fees.

Schools do pay those fees if they have no other choice.

But in the above example, the woman was already well-known to the school and the staff, and so they wanted to save some money which could be used to benefit the school in other ways.

Putting aside the fact that the school in this example wanted to save the money, what it does tell us is that there are people who earn large finder’s fees by simply sending schools and companies the names and details of good candidates for job positions.

The whole purpose of these agencies is to find good candidates for positions freeing up schools and companies so that they can carry on as normal.

Agencies sort out those who are good for the role from those who are not and then forward on the details.

All the schools or company needs to do is interview the candidates.

Today, many Bird Dog organisations simply set up websites where people submit their details and CVs, and the website owner then forwards those details to any companies that approach them.

The website owners liaise between the two until a final decision has been made.

Whenever anyone accepts a job offer, the website owner is paid a finder’s fee.

The internet has allowed people to set up Bird Dog websites where they earn money from both parties.

Instead of being paid a finder’s fee every time they send the details of a person that resulted in a successful sale, purchase, or placement, they take an admin (membership) fee from both parties who open up an account and add their details.

This is like a middleman marketplace service where each party searches for the other.

It doesn’t earn the same amount per person/deal as a traditional Bird Dog deal, but it is a lot more passive and can allow you to earn more because your website processes more people.

Instead of earning £2,000 from supplying one successful candidate to a job placement, you earn £2,000 from having 200 people paying you £10 per month to have a profile on your website.

You can charge more than £10 if you wish, but you need to not make it too expensive otherwise you are pricing people out.

But if you were able to charge £20 per month, you would only need 100 to make you £2,000 per month without having to do any research or communicating with people.

Another kind of online Bird Dogging is where you introduce people to specific coaching and mentoring programs.

Some people call it High Ticket Affiliate Marketing because people earn a large fee when they sign someone up to a program they are affiliated with.

To use that popular Shakespeare misquote…

A rose by any other name is still a rose.

No need to email in, I know that it is incorrect, but for this example it works well.

Whether you send someone to a mentoring program for a £1,000 commission, or send the details of a property to a property investor for a £1,000 finder’s fee, you are still introducing one person to another and being rewarded when there’s a successful purchase.

There are a lot of people currently selling expensive programs to earn large affiliate commissions (finder’s fees), some people think that the marketplace is saturated, I am not so sure about that, myself.

What I do know is that there are many different industries where you can be paid a large fee for introducing people to the right people.

The reason why people pay you a lot for your efforts is that you save them a lot of time and work.

Instead of them having to do extensive research, spend time running advertising campaigns, reach out and talk to people, you do it for them allowing them to carry on doing what they do best, which is the work they do.

Another example would be Eric who I wrote about here: Eric Regularly Makes £2,100 For Doing Just 30 Minutes Work!

Eric contacted a company that specialised in working with concrete such as laying concrete floors and bases, and asked them if they would allow him to find them customers.

When they said yes, he set himself on Facebook Marketplace advertising concreting services, and whenever anyone contacted him he would go to their place to take notes, photos, and measure up the job.

He would pass the information over to the concreting company who would give him a quote. He would add his finder’s fee on top and then send the inflated quote to the customer.

If they said yes, he would arrange between the two parties when the work can be done, and then liaised between them until the work was finished.

He would bank over £2,000 per job for simply finding the concrete company customers.

Because Eric wasn’t doing the actual concreting and focussed his efforts on finding customers, he was able to find more than one customer each month meaning that he could earn thousands more than when he worked a day job… and still have more free time to enjoy life.

Eric, like many other Bird Dogs, doesn’t need a lot in the way of equipment. He uses a smartphone, a notepad and pen, Facebook, a tape measure, and an email. He may use a laptop, but he doesn’t need to.

Most people have a smartphone, a Facebook account, and a notepad and pen.

Depending on what service you decide to offer, there may not be much more you need than that.

How Do You Find An Extra £300 To Pay The Sudden Increase In Rent?

This week I read on the BBC website, a couple in their 30s have had to postpone their plans to have a family because their rent was suddenly increased by £300 per month.

Their rent for their two-bedroom property in Surrey went up from £1,200 to £1,500 overnight.

The rent increase was too much for them and forced them to downsize and move into a one-bedroom property.

Aimee, 32, told the BBC:

“I’m at the age where I want to have children, but because we had to downsize, we are just unable to.”

She says she and her husband won’t now try to start a family until they are able to move again.

“I now pretty much live out of one room. I pretty much work, sleep and everything from my bedroom.”

Aimee has had bad experiences in the past renting property that was mouldy, damp, and with water dripping down the walls, which affected her health.

“There was a period when I had a lot of difficulty with anxiety and stress. I caught shingles nearly a year ago due to stress issues I had either with money or housing.”

Fearing that she could be a perpetual renter, Aimee and her husband have considered relocating to the North of England as a chance to get a foot on the property ladder.

That would mean leaving behind her extended family, friends, and support network, something she and her husband do not want to do.

We can argue the rights and wrongs of the rental markets until the cows come home, but that won’t change the fact that rents have and will continue go up, and many people will struggle to afford them.

We will not change that by debating between ourselves, and I cannot see the government stepping in to help renters or change the laws to prevent rents going up.

How A Pack Of Onions Made Aldi Cry With Joy!

Today I was shown a post on Facebook talking about a 3-pack of onions that was bought from an Aldi store.

The post (below) had two photos which showed a hand drawn image of a hand flicking the middle finger.

The woman who posted it is from the US and she says she saw it in one of the groups she was a member of.

I can’t tell whether it was from an Aldi store in the US, the UK, or anywhere in the world, but what I do know is this…

People are talking about it on social media and people are saying that they are going to their local Aldi to see if they can find it too.

In this day of social media viral marketing, I cannot help wondering if this was done intentionally to get people talking about Aldi.

You just never know.

I mean, the woman who shared it is a business woman from what I can see and she did say that she saw it in one of the groups she was a member of.

Does that group actually exist?

I can’t imagine that anyone would actually ask her to prove that it came from a group because there is no need to know that information. It could simply be a bit of storytelling and misdirection.

Aldi spend a small fortune on doing television, radio, and online advertising and so they may not be behind this, but they have been known to do online viral stunts in the past because these kinds of posts can do a lot of good for a company.

When something is shared from a 3rd party it can have a completely different effect to paid advertising from the actual company.

It’s also possible that someone in the store, either a customer or a shop assistant, drew the image for fun.

Whoever and for whatever reason they did it, it has caused a bit of an online stir causing a lot of people to talk about Aldi, which is 100% free advertising.

It is an ‘offensive’ hand gesture, but it’s not too offensive. It could have been far worse.

This hand drawn image sits nicely in the sweet spot where it is offensive enough to be fun, but not too outrageously offensive to cause mass public upset.

So, the question is… who did it?

Was it done by one person who thought it would be funny, or was it sanctioned by Aldi itself as part of a ‘3rd party’ online viral marketing campaign?

We’ll probably never know.

These things do happen. This is nothing new.

Many years ago British newspapers reported the amazing story about how a child used his dad’s credit card to book a flight – to the US, if I remember correctly – and managed to leave the UK before anyone realised he was gone.

The story was a little bit sensational, I mean, how did a child under the age of 13 manage to get through security and board a plane to the US alone?

Much of it didn’t ring true, but people’s disbelief was suspended because it was published in many of the major news papers which people (at that time) held in high regard and trusted them to print truthful stuff.

Also, I think this was before the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and so airport security was a lot less strict back then.

Anyway, the sensational story that sounded too good to be true was too good to be true because it wasn’t.

It was a story conceived by a marketing agency working for a credit card company.

I’m not sure what the message was that they were trying to get across.

Maybe they wanted to say that using their credit card was so simple even a child could do it.

Whatever the message was, it had people talking.

News papers were syndicating the story, it was reported on television, and people were sharing it in emails and on online message boards and forums (pre social media era).

When people are talking about your company or product… it will lead to sales.

There’s some evidence to show that even when people publicly complain about bad service or a bad experience (genuine or perceived) it can have a positive effect and lead to an increase in sales.

It just depends on how bad the service or experience was.

When the majority of people are talking about you, it means that they are not talking so much about your competition.

You don’t need to be the best at what you do, either.

A perfect example of this would be the local car garage that sponsors several local sports teams and competitions.

The company’s name is seen by players, competitors, and people watching.

When the owner hands out awards and trophies to the winners, their name is called out when they go on stage.

The people in the audience get to see them and learn who they are.

When the people in the audience have car issues and need to take it to a garage, they already know the name of a local garage without having to look them up.

It makes it a lot easier to find their details when you already know their name, and probably have the company details on competition and team flyers, calendars, and paperwork.

Now, imagine that there is another local garage that does a better job, is often faster and cheaper than the other garage.

They will need to work triply hard to find customers because their name is not being seen or talked about by as many people on a regular basis.

The person who is talked about the most will more-often-than-not beat the person who isn’t talked about much.

It’s just the way it is.

And so with that in mind, if you have a business, no matter what industry you are in or what products you sell, you need people to know who you are and to be talking about you more than your competition.

And if you can do it by creating a ‘fun buzz’ perceived to be from a 3rd party, more the better.

If you are someone who doesn’t have a business and is not interested in trying to get people talking about them, and just want a simple way to make money… read on.

There are many ways today where you can make money using just your smartphone or tablet.

A perfect example of this would be betting on football.

Betting may sound scary for some people, but our good friend Stephen Lewis, he bags himself between £380 and £725 each week betting on specific football games.

You can use a laptop if you prefer but you but it can just as easily be done on a smartphone or tablet.

But he didn’t, he won £141.32 because he chose to back the expected losers… although HE expected them to win… which they did.

With so much information online today, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was possible to find everything you needed to learn anything, for free.

For example, if you wanted to build a successful online business that generated a passive income, there will be everything you need online to learn how.

You wouldn’t need to buy any programs or products because it will all be there online somewhere for free.

The problem with free information is that it isn’t always together in one place.

Anyone who wants to source the information required to learn something specific for free will have to spend hours, days, weeks and even months trawling through YouTube videos, web pages, and signing up to email lists to acquire free reports.

It can take a lot of time and effort to sort through the crap to find the most useful information.

Here’s the thing… when you are trying to save money by learning something for free… it actually costs you more in the long run.

It costs a lot in time and effort to learn something for free… and it can cost you a lot in LOST revenue if you are taking forever to get started.

That is one of the problems most people overlook.

They think they are doing great by learning a new set of skills or building a business for free, but it can take them a lot longer meaning that they don’t see their desired results as fast as they should.

Another thing to consider is the mindset aspect.

People who generally want everything for free and avoid spending money to get what they want, usually don’t believe that they can sell anything for a half decent price.

They may tell people that they intend to sell a product for £297 but deep down inside they will doubt that people will pay that price because they themselves won’t pay it.

Think about it, if they are not willing to pay the price to learn something, then why would others?

Even if you know other people are willing to spend that kind of money, they struggle with the idea that people will buy it from them because they are not the type of person who will spend that kind of money.

Your internal world is expressed through your external actions and so if you are a freebie seeker, it is safe to say that your internal world is all about getting stuff for ‘free’ IE not paying for it, and if that is you, you will find it hard to believe that people will buy from you.

Knowing something and subconsciously believing something are two very different things.

Successful and wealthy people in general pay for tools, services, and education without question.

Yes, wealthy people are generally thought to be tight Scrooge-like characters, but that is because they generally don’t like to waste their money.

They choose what they spend their money on wisely.

They very often question what they are spending their money on and what they will get back from that purchase.

Successful and wealthy people won’t hesitate to spend money on tools, services, and education if it is likely to have a positive return.

Non successful and wealthy people will often spend money on entertainment and pleasure which they can ill afford, successful and wealthy people will avoid entertainment if it will put them in a bad financial position.

Freebie seekers have a mindset that is often associated with greed. They want everything for nothing.

A perfect example of this would be the story of the Queenpins, a group of women in the US who were so obsessed with getting free stuff using coupons, they went on to run one of the biggest multi-million counterfeit scams in US history.

They generated $25 million selling fake coupons via a website at half the ‘saving’ price.

Some coupons would allow a person to claim a product completely free and get ‘cash back’.

For example, a person could use a $25 coupon to purchase a $15 bag of dog food and receive the difference in cash.

They defrauded companies of multiple millions while making millions for themselves, which I believe was laundered by buying items for cash then selling them on.

They were finally caught and punished for their crimes.

The comedy (that’s debateable) film, Queenpins, staring Kristen Bell, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Bebe Rexha, and Vince Vaughn is based on the real-life story.

I know that many people struggle financially and that they often need to be savvy with their shopping so using free coupons and getting freebies can be a necessity, but genuine people do not want to be in that position for long if they can help it.

Greedy people however, will do their utmost to get anything and everything for free… and that is their downfall.

When you are a person that is constantly on ‘the take’ giving little back, you will suffer in the long run.

People will get fed up of you and avoid you, doors will close to you, and opportunities will dry up.

In all of my years in business, I have to say, I cannot name one freebie seeker who has gone onto be successful and become wealthy…

But I have seen many people who have risked their money buying products, services, tools, and education to go on to become incredibly successful.

It’s like it is some kind of natural law of the universe.

I don’t know if there is any truth to it, I don’t want to go all metaphysical and ‘woo woo’ on you, but it does seem that what you get out of life is determined by what you put into it.

It is also very much amplified.

If you were to spend £1,000 on a project, it could potentially earn you back £10,000 or more, but if you keep on taking, there is nothing of yours to be amplified.

Again, I am not going to say that this is a law of the universe like gravity, but it does seem to be something that we see happening over and over and over again.

You get back what you give.

Even if you don’t get it back today, you do later on in life.

A perfect example of this is someone who paid to learn something specific as a way to land a new job.

They may not get the job they were hoping for at the time, but what they learned helps them a year or two later to land an even better job or do something of their own which is better than the initial job they wanted.

It’s kind of ironic that freebie seekers trying to avoid paying for products or services end up paying a lot more in lost time, energy, and money in the long.

If you cannot buy something due to financial difficulties that is a different story, you do what you can do at the time, but if you are out to get everything for nothing, you will simply not progress far in life.

If You Are Under 60, Your Retirement Depends On This…

I don’t know if you have heard of the “Three Legged Stool” pension model before, but it is an old model that financial planners used to describe the three types of income for a secure financial retirement.

The Three Legged Stool describes the three parts to a successful retirement, which are:

  1. Personal Savings.

  2. Employee Pension.

  3. Government Pension.

Sadly, our grandparents were probably the last generation to benefit from it because times have changed and the above are no longer considered ‘secure’ forms of retirement income.

Interest rates for personal savings have been at their lowest for decades and so keeping your money in a savings account is not a good way to earn an income.

Workplace pensions may sound like a good idea, but they are a cynical ploy by the government to put the pension responsibility onto companies and their employees because…

They are slowly running out of money and the government state pension will soon come to an end.

The reason they keep pushing up the retirement age is so that they:

  1. Start paying people their pensions a few years later as a way to save money.

  2. Have people earning a wage longer so they are not drawing from the government pots.

  3. Are generating extra tax and NI contributions to help cover the pensions they are paying now.

It has been predicted that unless something drastic happens soon, the pension pot will dry up within the next 15 years.

In our grandparent’s day, companies often paid into a pension pot for their employees, but they became expensive to do and the government would occasionally ‘raid’ these pots when they needed more money leaving workers with less than they were expecting.

Eventually companies stopped running employee pension schemes leaving employees and the government (who were already collecting pension payments) to be responsible for their own pensions.

The government have since forced companies to offer workplace pensions as a way to ‘past the buck’ once again.

Sadly, with job security at an all time low, and people swapping jobs regularly, it is not easy to keep an eye on what workplace pension you are (or were) paying into.

Some people have paid very little into a workplace pension that it would actually give them very little back in return.

Every company has their own pension provider and the average Brit may now have several workplace pensions that should be somehow consolidated.

So, the truth of the matter is this…

You cannot rely on the government, your workplace pension scheme, or your savings to pay you a decent income during your retirement.

For those who are not yet retired and drawing a pension it has been advised that you should start a dedicated retirement income stream that you can work on during your retirement.

Obviously, that income stream should be one that doesn’t require a lot of hard work.

The last thing you want to do during your retirement is to be doing 8 hours of hard work each day.

What you need is something that is as close to a passive income as possible.

Passive income is where you earn money and do nothing for it.

An example of this would be a company owner who is paid an income from a business that runs itself.

A business that runs itself would have a workforce, a manager, and an accountant etc.

Every aspect of the day-to-day working is done by someone else; all the owner needs to do is receive money each and every month.

The other form of passive income is where you earn money each month from financial investments.

For most people, a passive income is less achievable than a semi-passive income.

A semi-passive is where you make a decent amount of money for very little work.

This is probably the number one form of ‘passive income’ you hear about online.

Far too many people online are talking about passive income when they are really talking about ‘semi-passive income’.

Just because you receive payments overnight while sleeping or while you were enjoying a meal with your family doesn’t make it a passive income.

Not when you consider that you first had to spend hours crafting content to get people to your product sales page.

Anything that requires work is not passive.

But, there are incomes which require different amounts of work and those that require little are called semi-passive income because you earn a decent amount of money for doing very little.

Spending an hour each day to generate more than the average monthly wage is a good semi-passive income, wouldn’t you agree?

Would that work for you?

Would you be happy to work a couple of hours a day if it generated more than what you earned while working full time as an employee?

As with most things, the passiveness comes after a certain amount of work at the beginning which is why it has been suggested that people in their 50s and 60s, and even their 40s, make a start as soon as possible so that by the time retirement comes around, they have an established business that requires less work and is paying out a decent income each month.

Most people do not like the idea of starting their own businesses and as they get closer to their retirement age they may like the idea even less.

But the good news is that as we get older, the tools, services, and technology that are used today become simpler and easier to use.

For example, I watched a short video the other day from a guy saying that he makes money by simply using his smartphone to record short videos which he then shares online on multiple platforms.

Those videos are edited using a free software called CapCut – there is a premium paid version but he usually only uses the free version – and a description is written in the free-to-use Google docs which he copies and pastes into the description boxes when he uploads them to several platforms.

Those videos then point to a specific sales page where he makes money whenever anyone purchases a product.

That is all he does.

He uses nothing more than his smartphone and free apps and tools.

It takes him an hour or two to knock up a few new videos which he shares over several days.

Now, I am not saying that this is something you would want to do, I am only telling you because I want you to realise how easy things have become.

None of what he does today was doable just a few years ago.

The idea of recording videos on your phone would have been unimaginable years ago, let alone the idea that you could share them with potentially millions of people for free AND earn an income from sharing them.

Today, it is just the norm.

People are using their phones daily to record videos which they are sharing online.

We are living in the the most documented period in all of human history.

Everyone is documenting their lives and sharing it online for other people to see.

The smart ones are doing it intentionally to earn an income.

Now, as I say, this is probably not something that appeals to you… but again, I wanted to highlight the potential of the phone that you are carrying around with you.

It is incredibly powerful when you really stop and think about it.

Another example is that of Dan Edwards who makes money using his smartphone, the Betfair app, and football games.

He never sees a game through to the end, though.

Why doesn’t he wait until the final whistle?

He doesn’t need to.

He usually ‘cashes-out’ in the first half.

The Refusal To Learn New Technology Keeps You Scratting For Pennies

I recently saw an oldish guy – yes, I know that I am no spring chicken myself, but I’d say that this guy was at least ten years older than me – with a van crammed full of used tat that he was taking to sell at the local car boot market.

I’ve seen him a few times; he is local to my area.

He takes his van of tat each and every week the market is on.

At first glance there doesn’t seem to be anything worth selling, but for all I know, there could be a few gems hidden deep within the van.

I often wonder what drives people to go to car boot markets each week to sell tat to other people.

I understand it when people are having a clear out and want to make a few extra pounds selling the items they no longer want or need, but I struggle to understand those people who spend their weeks gathering up knackered tat with the idea of selling it at the weekend.

I know that it is nice to have money in your pocket, but when selling old knackered tat you are really limiting yourself to who you can sell it to, and how much you can earn.

When something is old, outdated, and basically knackered, very few people are going to want it, and even less are willing to pay much for it.

Plus, when you are selling it from a table or a tarpaulin at a car boot market, you can only sell it to those who are there, and so if no one at that market wants your items, you make no money.

The reason I am talking about this old guy is that I have never seen him with a smartphone and everything about him screams ‘old school’.

I imagine he has been doing the same thing since he was a teen back in the 1960s.

I bet he was a bit of a ‘wheeler dealer’ back then, and I cannot help but think that he has not evolved much since.

Firstly, had he embraced modern technology, he could potentially sell his tat to people further afield on platforms such as eBay and Vinted on any day, and not just rely on those people gathered in field at the weekend.

Secondly, he could have progressed to selling digital products online giving him more money for less work.

Today I saw this post (below) in a Facebook group where the poster, Domonique Williams, said that she created a digital product using the free version of Canva, and then generated $1,500 (£1,200 ATOW) in just one day selling it at $77 (£61 ATOW).

People are using free tools to create digital products that they are selling online… and they are doing it all from the comfort of their own homes.

Unlike the old guy who has to spend his time loading and unloading his van, and driving around the town sourcing products to sell, these people sit at home in a comfy seat with a mug of their favourite brew, and make digital products to sell… or sell other people’s digital products.

Maybe this old guy enjoys what he does and enjoys talking to people at the markets. There is often the same old faces who gather at these events and they enjoy catching up.

Maybe he does it for that, it’s not just about making money, but a social event where he meets friends and like minded people… and there’s nothing wrong with that if that is why he does it.

Sadly, I have noticed that he is struggling to walk and carry things now that he is aging, and that can only make it harder to earn money.

So, not only is he selling knackered tat that very few people want or need to a small audience… for pennies, he is also struggling to do it efficiently and effectively.

It would be interested to know how long it would take for him to make a clear £1,200 profit selling tat for pennies.

I have no reason to doubt Domonique’s claims, although let’s not be fooled, she is using the post as a way to sell an affiliate network program called UBC.

I imagine that if anyone purchases access to that program through her, she will earn a sales commission between $500 and $1,000.

Making $500 or more per sale isn’t bad going. It’s certainly a lot easier on your body than carrying crates of heavy tat to and from the van every market day.

I don’t know if the old guy has refused to embrace modern technology or whether he didn’t see a need for it, and it has since gone on to overtake him and leave him behind, but he has been left working hard scratting for pennies while others are banking money without having to leave their homes.

Also, the people making money online are not being affected by the weather like market traders are.

Cold and wet weather can put people off from going out.

Car boot markets usually only happen during the summer. Winter in the UK is pretty bleak and it can be too cold, wet, and icy for trawling through tables of tat in a large field.

Incredibly hot weather can also prevent people going out, it can also encourage people to go and do something ‘better’ instead.

Would you rather walk around a car boot market, go to the park with the family, have a barbeque, go to the pub for a few cold beers with friends, or go to the beach?

I imagine the car boot is at the bottom of your list.

Yes, when the weather is good you can do more than one thing a day, but I still think given the option, most people would rather do something else.

The point is… a car boot market trader’s earnings can be greatly affected by external and environmental conditions, but those people who work online, they can earn money no matter what the weather is doing outside their window.

The other thing to consider is that digital products can be bought at any time of the day and night and from virtually anywhere in the world… you are not relying on a small group of people wandering around a field on a Sunday between the hours of 7 am and 3pm.

As I stand and watch that older gentleman spend several hours on a Saturday afternoon struggling to load his van with crates and boxes of his latest required tat, I cannot help but think that he is suffering a cycle of struggle of his own making because he didn’t embrace technology.

The tools and services we now have access to are the most sophisticated and freeing ever.

The idea that you can take your phone out of your pocket and film yourself talking in your garden, and then upload it to a platform resulting in that video being seen by potentially millions of people at no cost to you whatsoever… is simply mind blowing.

And when you use those tools intentionally with a plan… you too could be banking a lot of money.

I am not going to say that making money online is easy… but I will say this, it is a lot easier to do than most jobs.

  • Recording a video on your phone is simple and easy.
  • Adding text and images to that video is simple and easy.
  • Taking photos and putting them online is simple and easy.
  • Adding text and images to those photos is simple and easy.
  • Writing emails, articles, social media posts, and eBooks is simple and easy.
  • Publishing those emails, articles, social media posts, and eBooks is simple and easy.

Compared to most ‘real’ jobs… working online is easy.

Over 20 years ago, if you wanted to record a series of videos for a product, or write and publish a book, and get in front of millions of people to tell them about your latest product… it would have cost you a lot of money and required you to hire a team of professionals.

Now, you can do it all for free with ease.

Now, if all of the above still sounds like a bit ‘too much’ for you, and you would like something even easier, then another fantastic thing that you can do with your smartphone from anywhere is to trade sporting events.

The smartphone allows us to connect with betting exchanges like Betfair and place bets on specific horses.

Why Making Money Is Like Cooking

I want to start by sharing this fantastic quote from Ruth Reichl

“The first time you make something, follow the recipe, then figure out how to tailor it to your own tastes.”

This is one of the problems that I have noticed with people who start a new business venture or a method of making money… very few actually follow a proven plan.

The plan is like a recipe that is used in cooking.

When someone has created a dish that tastes great, they write down what ingredients were used and when they were added to the cooking process.

People take those recipes and follow them to make the exact dish to taste.

If the dish doesn’t taste quite how you would like it then, and only then, should you attempt to make the dish a second time making any subtle changes required to suit your individual tastes.

Unless you are a great chef who has been cooking professionally for years, it would be foolish to attempt to make a dish the first time by changing any of the ingredients.

Andi, our techy chap in Portugal, loves a good tarka dhal from the Indian restaurant but with very few Indian restaurants in his area he took it upon himself to make one of his own.

He searched online for an authentic recipe and began cooking. The dhal he me made was, in his words, the best thing he had ever eaten.

It is safe to say that it was a success.

And the reason why it was a success is that he followed the recipe to the letter.

He followed what was written down and didn’t deviate from it in any way.

Now that he has successfully made the dhal, he can make any changes to it if he wishes.

As it stands, he doesn’t need to make any changes, but he could add more salt or more garlic if he wanted to.

If you want to make more money or start a business venture of any kind, you MUST first follow exactly what someone else did successfully.

If you wanted to open up a coffee shop, it would make sense to go and see what the successful coffee shops in your area are doing and if possible, ask what it was that they did when they first started.

You may realise that the fancy decor you intend to have hanging from the ceiling to make the place more ‘cosy’ could actually be a lot of unnecessary ‘dust collectors’ that will require a lot of cleaning, and that most customers will hardly notice it or appreciate it.

People starting out in business have this idea of what they want, but they often decide that they want to do it ‘their way’ which ultimately doesn’t deliver the results they desire or causes them a lot more extra unnecessary work or expense.

A perfect example of this would be the person who wanted to be a successful author making money selling novels and who shunned the advice from a seriously successful author because they didn’t want to do ‘what they did’ or write the ‘types of books’ suggested.

I’m not saying that you should only write the kind of books you don’t personally want to write, but there could be a huge chasm between what you want to write and what people want to read.

It could be something as simple as deliverability of your product.

Many authors make a lot of money by writing a lot of short stories instead of big novels.

They take a story that would fit a novel, but they break it down into a series of easier to read novellas which can be published quickly and can actually make them more money over time.

A person who is fixed on writing the next great novel and doesn’t want to write what people want to read… could end up wasting all of their time and fail to make any money.

It would make more sense to take the advice and write the stories people want to read and then publish them as a series of shorter novellas, and then… once the money is coming in and you are building an audience… write your bigger dream novels.

It doesn’t matter how good your story is or how well written your book is, if you do not have an audience to sell it to, you will struggle to make sales.

When you do have an audience or a fanbase, it is easier to make sales of your products.

Going back to the idea of the coffee shop, if a coffee shop in the neighbouring town had built a very successful business by focusing completely on giving customers what they want, would it not make sense for you to replicate that in your own town?

You might love the taste of a little-known South American coffee, but would it not make more sense to sell a coffee that is favoured by most people?

Yes, by all means offer your little-known South American coffee as a speciality coffee, some people may love it, but it wouldn’t make sense offering it as your main brand just because you love it.

There’s a reason some coffee shops become giant brands, and that is because they focus on giving customers what they want in both taste of food and drinks, and experience.

Yes, of course, there would be subtle differences and you won’t do an exact copy, but you would model your coffee shop and business on theirs.

You must add your authentic self into your business and you must have your own angle, but that is just what people see on the surface.

Under the hood your business should be the same as any other successful business.

To help you, here’s a six-step checklist for creating your own successful venture.

  1. Copy Business Models That Work. Look at how prospects are collected and converted into repeat customers.

  2. Imitate Offers That Do Well. Look at them structurally. Look at the components and make sure your offers include them.

  3. Replicate Successful Promotions. Where do successful businesses promote their products and services? What do they publish to attract customers?

  4. Where To Innovate. Innovate only when it comes to your own ‘character’ in your content and offers. You’re a unique persona, after all.

  5. When To Be Creative. Creativity comes in when you remix the sources you’re imitating. Make the recipe your own by changing specific ingredients such as furniture similar to Starbucks, but decor similar to Costa.

  6. Don’t Be Afraid To Be Original. Originality comes from collecting and combining what you like, and cutting away what you don’t. But you won’t know what those things are until you TRY THEM. Adjust only AFTER following the recipe once.

The whole purpose of a recipe or a plan is to make everything easy on yourself.

Why spend a day cooking multiple batches of food using a variety of ingredients trying to get the right dhal when you can use a recipe and cook one easily within an hour?

Don’t make things hard on yourself, follow something that is proven to work.

I Would Never Suggest You Do This…

The American news outlet NBC ran a report on their website about some of the shady marketing techniques used by the team promoting the affiliate marketing coaching program, Legendary Marketer.

The report followed three women who all separately signed up for the Legendary Marketer’s $7 ‘15 Day Business Builder Challenge’.

They signed up after seeing several short-form videos on Instagram and TikTok promoting the product.

The $7 challenge is a lead magnet used to get people into the program so that they can sell them further products.

There’s nothing wrong with that…

It is a common business practice used to entice people onto their email list by offering a cheap introduction product.

What is wrong here is that people who sign up for the challenge are subjected to ‘calls’ with company ‘business advisors’ who have advised some people to “sell your car if you have to, put it on a credit card, borrow money from your friends or family” to purchase the ‘Uplevel Blueprint’ course for $2,500.

It was reported that advisors told people “spend this $2,500 and your life’s gonna change tremendously.”

What they teach could itself be life changing, but suggesting people to get into debt, or make their lives difficult by selling their car, is a big NO-NO for me.

Yes, if are single and can manage without a car, or have a second family car and can manage with just one, and you CHOOSE to sell your car because you want to find the funds to start a business of your own and you believe that it is going to work… be my guest.

But I most certainly wouldn’t suggest that you sell your only car if you need it. I wouldn’t recommend using your rent or mortgage money to buy a product of ours, either.

If you are struggling financially, I would never suggest that you do anything that would make your situation any worse.

Credit cards are handy because they allow you to borrow money which you can pay back in more manageable chunks later, and they give you breathing space so if that is something you are happy with, that’s fine… but I would never pressure you to use one.

You buy a product because you CHOOSE to.

Using credit is a great way to leverage other people’s money and many people have successfully made a lot of money using credit cards, but you must remember… you have to pay back what you use.

Another issue NBC found with Legendary Marketer is that they say that they will teach people how to make affiliate commissions promoting big brands…

But instead they focus mostly on telling people to promote the Legendary Marketer program where they pay $1,000 commission per person who signs up for the $2,500 ‘Uplevel Blueprint’ program.

Again, there is nothing inherently wrong with earn while you learn programs, or being paid a referral or finder’s fee for introducing new people to a program.

But it seems that Legendary Marketer used big brand companies as the hook to get people into their program which is really just all about self-promotion.

The NBC report stated that adverts and videos for Legendary Marketer were ‘very misleading’.

I’m not surprised to find that Dave Sharpe – one of the two Dave’s behind the Empower Network that was hugely popular in 2012 which imploded spectacularly leaving a lot of people out of pocket – is behind Legendary Marketer.

The Empower Network was a Multi Level Marketing (MLM) program where people would pay a monthly fee only to be constantly encouraged to get other people to join as a way to earn commissions.

The focus was to build teams and everyone who signed through you would earn you a monthly commission.

One of the biggest problems with those old MLM programs is that you were given a ‘blog’ that was hosted on their platform with all of their branding and as soon as you cancelled your payments, you were locked out and your blog deleted.

You were left with absolutely nothing, which is bad considering you were paying to ‘build an online’ business.

All the time of being a member, your blog was nothing more than an advert for ‘their’ program.

The truth about the Empower Network was that they simply wanted you to buy into a program that would teach you how to sell their program for them, and that’s it.

You were paying to do their advertising for them.

Since MLM have gained a bad reputation (much deserved) over the years, a lot of MLMers have turned to building Network Marketing programs.

There are some good and legit ones out there – and by legit I mean that they actually teach you how to build an ‘independent’ online business as well as being able to earn referral commissions…

But it seems that there is some still using the old MLM ethos of trying to get as many people into the program by any means necessary purely so they can bank as much money as possible.

Those are the types of programs you should avoid.

Having a mentor or coach is good.

Learning new skills is good.

Earning a referral commission or a finder’s fee is good.

But if you are not building your own independent business while doing any of the above… that is not good.

I was pleased to see that several Network Marketing programs were teaching people that having an email list is the backbone of an online business.

Yes, they may teach people to find clients and customers using free social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, but their core message is… you should have an email list and send regular easy-to-write emails.

It is essential to have an email list when building an online business because it is a source of customers you own.

Unlike social media platforms where you can lose your account overnight and lose your list of connections – or the government bans the platform which could be happening in the US with TikTok, you own the email list.
