The Doggy Creche

You’ve heard about boarding kennels and you’ve heard about dog walking services, but how about something between the two? Gail Nord from New York, set up Playground Pups which seems to fill  the gap nicely.

Playground Pups is essentially a day care facility for dogs. Look on it as a crèche or nursery for dogs. Apparently the business, based in Manhattans upper west side is going from strength to strength and Gail is looking to open up a new location.

This is an idea which seems to make a lot of sense, particularly in urban areas with a lot of flats and apartments. Busy professionals often feel guilty about leaving their pets home all day while they go to work. This service solves the problem for them.

Might this work in your area? If there is a high concentration of pet owning professionals, I think it might. Not something to set up overnight, but there’s great expansion potential for this.

Small Pet Funerals

There are already services that deal with the disposal of the remains of larger pets like cats and dogs, but what do you do when something smaller dies? When our guinea pig dies it was a job for a shoe box and a shovel, but as with most things in life, it seems like there may be room for a premium service.

So how about looking into creating a burial kit for hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs and the like? Even pet goldfish deserve a more dignified end than one involving a toilet flush. So there’s the idea…small pet burials. Who will be first to take this up?

Teaching Online

It doesn’t seem so long ago that if you wanted to make your living as a teacher, you needed to get a job in a school, a college or give private lessons at home, or at the home of your students.

The advent of online services like Skype and Youtube has literally opened up the world to tutors and teachers. Just about anything that could previously only be taught in a face to face situation, can now be taught online.

Not only does this mean that your students can come from anywhere in the world, but it also opens up myriad new viable subjects and courses.

If you live in Rochdale, the chances of finding enough students locally, who are interested in learning ancient Peruvian, for example, are not high. But when you can garner your ‘class’ from the entire world, it becomes a much more viable proposition.

So is there something you could teach online- it could be a language, a skill or something else? If so, there could be people from the four corners of the globe, just waiting for your PC based class to start enrolling students

Food Preparation Profits

Go to Marks & Spencer food hall and for a premium price, you can have your vegetables prepared to within an inch of their lives. In fact, all there’s left to do is cut open the packaging and throw them straight in the pan.

Produce tends to be a lot cheaper in other outlets, but you have to wash, peel, cut and whatever else you do with veggies. You can probably tell that I don’t cook!

Anyway, what if (say) there was a stall in your local market which sold nothing. Instead, it took the fresh vegetables that market customers had just bought, pre-prepared them to the customers instructions?

M&S presentation, but at a little over market prices. Might such a stall prove popular by combining low prices with convenience? I’m not sure really, you’d need to try it to find out.

Prison Consultant

Imagine you were in danger of being sent to prison. It doesn’t bear thinking about does it? You’d feel frightened and vulnerable. You’d have little idea what to expect or how to deal with it. It’s this scenario that explains the growth of a little-known industry in the United States – prison consultancy.

A prison consultant is someone who has been to prison and ‘knows the ropes’. The role involves advising those facing jail on life ‘inside’ including personal safety, medical issues and coping day to day. High profile prisoners like Bernard Madoff have reportedly hired consultants.

I don’t know whether a similar service sector exist here in the UK, but if you are unfortunate enough to have experience of life inside, it could be something to think about. Thinking more widely though, this is further evidence of how you can turn a negative experience in your life into something positive.

Has something ‘bad’ happened to you. Could there be a business to be had in helping others avoid the same thing, cope with it if it happens?

Speed Dating For Baby Sitters

Given how vital it is that you get it right, it’s surprising how much time and care most people pay to selecting a babysitter. It’s often so difficult to find someone, that the first available person gets the job by default.

Katy Langhorst and Tara Harville-Fry from Danvers, Massachusetts have provided a solution to this problem in their own community by setting up SitterMixer.

Sitter Mixer organises events at which parents can interview 5-10 potential babysitters with a backdrop of marker-appropriate vendor stalls and refreshments. All the participants are eligible for door prizes and raffles. “The atmosphere is part cocktail party, part speed dating and part job flair,” Langhorst explained.

Parents and sitters both have to pre-register online. The fee is $39 for parents and $5 for sitters who must be 15 years old or older. The sitters fill out an application form.

The business is apparently doing very well, with several events already successfully completed. Can you see any reason why this wouldn’t work in your town? I can’t.

Fishing For Profits

On the face of it, fishing seems a pretty simple activity – you need a rod, a line and some bait. Okay, there’s a bit more to it than that, but like all activities with a big following, it’s attracted the attention of a host of entrepreneurs, keen to cash in on the fact that participants are prepared to pay a lot for something they think will give them an edge.

The latest thing I’ve seen is something called the Fish Eyes Rod and Reel. Google it if you’re interested, but what the product does in essence, is place a small camera right above the bait, so you can see when the fish is about to bite.

Needless to say this is an American idea, and it sells for less than $80, which seems cheap to me. Not sure if this is available in the UK yet, but it sounds like it’s something that would sell well.

When you’re looking for an opportunity to make money, always look at the markets first and products second. Activities like Golf and fishing are ideal because of the large number of participants. Launching a product aimed at lacrosse players would be more tricky!

Restaurant Cooking Classes

There are a number of restaurants in the US which utilise the ‘down time’ in their kitchens (usually mornings) to run cooking classes for the public. It makes perfect sense.

There’s no need to set up a special classroom-everything you need is already in situ, and it makes additional use of an under-used resource. We can take a couple of things from this I think.

The first thing to consider is whether you could organise or co-ordinate, something similar here in the UK. There are thousands of restaurants with spare capacity which would welcome the additional revenue that something like this would bring.

No need to own a restaurant yourself. You could simply market the courses and reach an arrangement with restaurateurs in your area.

The second thing to consider is the wider issue of spare capacity. Do you have spare capacity or an under-utilised resource in your business, and could you make some additional revenue by renting it out during slack periods?

The Bones Of An Idea

I’d hesitate to saw you can make a profitable business out of anything, but the range of possibilities open to you is probably wider than you might imagine.

Who would have thought that an expertise in anthropology could lead to a profitable business, but that’s precisely what happened to a lecturer from Teeside University, who now makes an extra income analysing the human remains found by police and other authorities around the world.

Dr Tim Thompson started his Anthronomics business to cope with demand, and the work has taken him as far afield as Thailand where he was involved in identifying Tsunami victims and Kosovo where he was called upon to help identify bodies in mass graves.

I’m not suggesting that identifying bone fragments is a viable opportunity for you, but what I am suggesting is that there may be opportunities to make extra money hidden away in your own expertise or profession.

Perhaps it’s time to give some thought to what may be right under your nose.

Movie Star Photo Studio

There was a time, not too long ago, when having your photograph taken was a fairly rare event. That’s all changed today of course, with just about everyone having a camera on their mobile phone.

There are a couple of problems; the photographs typically taken tend to be quite mundane, and they’re rarely printed out. An idea we saw in California could easily be copied anywhere.

It’s a photo studio where you go in and are cast as a characters from a film. The studio has costumes depicting a wide range of characters.

Customers book an appointment either individually, or as a family, and get to portray their favourite film characters. They are then offered prints in a range of sizes and styles.

Photography is becoming incredibly common (I read somewhere that there were more photographs taken last year than in all of history!) but interesting or high quality photography is less so.

Professionals need to find a way to differentiate what they do from the crowd, and this is one way to do it.

Every day, tourists pay a fee to see how the cookies are made and no doubt leave with a bag full of the product too.

What is commonplace to one person can be fascinating to others. You may be bored stiff by your place of work, but might others be interested in seeing how you do what you do?

If so, there may be a readymade extra stream of income for you just waiting to be exploited.

Rent A Wife

This is possibly the most sexist idea we’ve presented so far, but I’m not going to let that stop us! I’m sure you’ve often heard woman complain that their husband doesn’t want a wife – he wants a cook cleaner/launderer ect.

Do you know what in some cases that’s true! There are many men who just want someone to do the chores for them without an emotional or romantic attachment, so why not offer the service?

The idea here is for a ‘Rent-A-Wife’ service, whereby men can pay someone by the hour to do all the stuff they might normally expect of a spouse.

Duties would include cooking, cleaning and laundry as well as any other chores and errands the customer needed doing.

Offering a service would generate a huge amount of publicity and controversy, but there’s no denying it would appeal greatly to men who simply don’t want any additional commitment or strings in their lives, but do want someone to share drudgery.

So who will be brave enough to take this one on?

‘Gilty’ Food

Interest in food and cooking has never been stronger. It seems like every other TV programme is devoted to food or cooking, and people have had their expectations raised regarding what’s possible.

A new idea from Germany seems to take this to a new level.

Esslack Food Spray allows you to graffiti your food or make it glitter like a pile of gold. It’s made from an edible dye and can be safety sprayed on anything. So if you want a gold tomato or a silver mushroom, there’s nothing stopping you.

I’m not sure I’m personally keen on this idea (I prefer my food to look like what it is) but I can certainly see a novelty market for this. I haven’t seen this being sold anywhere in the UK yet, so it could be worth looking into if you have the right contacts or outlets.

Avoid The Child Benefit Traps

The complicated rules on claiming child benefit are landing some parents with shocking tax bills and causing administrative hassle.

Since 2013 those who earn more than £50,000 a year have to pay back some of the child benefit they receive: £1 of every £100 earned over the threshold. If you earn more than £60,000, you’ll need to repay all of it.

One family has just had a £7,400 bill from HMRC because the sole earner was bringing home less than £50,000 a year, but his company car was classed as a benefit in kind, propelling him over the threshold. Be sure to register for child benefit if you earn over £50,000.

A stay-at-home parent who hasn’t won’t get National Insurance credits that build up their state-pension entitlement while they are looking after their children. Your children may also have trouble getting a National Insurance number if they’ve never been on the list.

If you earn over £50,000 then you sign up and pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge via your tax return. Earn over £60,000 and you still need to register, but you can opt not to receive the payments. You will still get any National Insurance credits due, but you won’t have to pay the tax charge.

Dinner With The Dead

When Na-yeon died four years ago aged seven, her mother, Jang Ji-sung, turned to technology to bring her back. Millions in South Korea tuned in to ‘Meeting You’, a television programme in which Jang donned a virtual-reality headset and sat down to her meal of seaweed soup with the avatar of her daughter.

The digital Na-yeon couldn’t respond to Jang’s words, but could ask “Where have you been, Mum? Did you think about me?” At one point, they appear to hold hands. “Maybe it’s a real paradise,” Jang said afterwards. “I met Na-yeon, who called my name with a smile. It was a very short time, but a very happy time.”

Others aren’t so sure, saying ”Having this type of interaction through an avatar could present a real challenge for some people in accepting the reality of the death.” London-based Peter Trainor, founder of Us Ai, agrees.

He worked with James Dunn, a young man with a rare condition, to create an algorithm that would mimic Dunn’s personality after his death, aged 24. In the end, Trainor shut down the company, he says. “We were beginning to attract the wrong sort of attention.”

How To Tap Your House For Cash

Britain’s equity-release market is expected to be worth more than £5bn this year: the number of people unlocking some of the value of their home in retirement continues to grow at rates of more than 20% a year.

But while this growth is understandable, with many people owning valuable properties by the time they retire but finding themselves short of disposable wealth, is equity release really the answer?

Downsizing may be a better option.

The allure of equity release is obvious. If you own an expensive property outright but need more money for everyday living expenses or home improvements, travel or helping out children, an equity-release plan offers real benefits.

You borrow money against the value of your house or, with some plans, sell a chunk of it. There are no repayments to make until after your death or you’ve moved into some form of care and the money is yours to spend how you wish. And you can stay in your own home.

However, there are substantial downsides. While the equity-release plan market is more competitive than in the past, the cost of products is still high compared with a conventional mortgage. The average borrower pays an interest rate of 4.55%, at least twice what you’d pay for a conventional home loan.

Moreover, as there is nothing to pay during your lifetime, your debt mounts up quickly due to the law of compound interest. There may be little or nothing to pass on to your heirs once the money is repaid on your death.

Another problem is that equity-release products can be constraining, particularly if your plans change. It may be difficult to move house, with extra charges to pay. You may struggle to make repayments during your lifetime, even if you want to reduce your debt.

Home-reversion plans, where you sell a chunk of your house rather than borrowing, are problematic too, since your property will effectively be valued at well below market value, reflecting the time that the equity-release provider has to wait to earn a return. Downsizing, by contrast, carries none of these headaches.

You simply sell your current property and buy a cheaper one, with the difference in value freeing up cash you use as you see fit. Your new house can be left to your heirs and there is no financial-product small print to worry about. For many older people, selling a large family home in order to move into a more modest property also has practical benefits. Smaller houses are easier and cheaper to maintain.

Nonetheless, downsizing isn’t right for everyone. If you don’t have a large property, moving to a smaller one may simply not be an option. The practicalities will also depend on the dynamics of your local housing market. How much can you sell for and what will a smaller property cost? And some people do not want the emotional wrench of leaving a much-loved family home.

Downsizing also carries costs. You’ll incur all the costs of moving house, including estate agents’ fees, solicitors’ costs and the removals firm’s charges. Plus you may have to pay stamp duty on the purchase price of a new house, though stamp-duty rates are lower on cheaper properties (and zero on purchases below £125,000).

The cheaper option Nevertheless, for most people, the total cost of downsizing is likely to be significantly lower than what your family effectively ends up paying through an equity-release product. The costs of moving house just do not compare to the cost of interest charges on a large loan rolled up over time.

In financial terms at least, downsizing is a better option than equity release for most people. If you’re willing and able to consider it, this should be the first thing you consider if you’re seeking to raise cash later in life.

When Buying On Credit Makes Sense

The days of bumper cashback offers or fantastic rewards with your credit card are long gone. But there are still several good reasons to pay with plastic. One is the protection you receive thanks to Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

Pay for something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card and the card provider is as liable as the seller if something goes wrong. Credit-card firms are currently swamped with Section 75 claims, thanks to Thomas Cook. The 178-year old travel agent went into administration in September, prompting thousands of customers who had booked trips on credit cards to submit refund claims.

You can put a claim in with your credit-card provider if the thing you purchased never arrives or isn’t what it should have been. For example, you could claim for flights you bought if the airline goes bust, or a car that breaks down days after you bought it. You even get protection for the whole cost if you only paid the deposit on your credit card.

Another reason to put some of your spending on a credit card is that it improves your credit rating. It is a myth that a person who has never borrowed has the best credit rating. Lenders want to see that you are a reliable borrower; if you’ve never borrowed, they don’t know you’ll pay them back.

Using a credit card and repaying the balance in full each month – or at least never missing a minimum payment – will bolster your credit rating. There are also financial benefits to spending on a credit card. If you can’t afford to buy something outright then an interest-free credit card is still the cheapest way to borrow. For example, Sainsbury’s Bank is offering 27 months of 0% interest for new spending.

Just make sure you clear the debt before the interest-free period expires, otherwise you’ll end up paying 20.9% interest. Divide your debt by the length of the interest-free period and then set up a direct debit for that amount, so you don’t miss a payment and clear the debt in time. You need to make at least the minimum payment each month or you may lose the 0% deal and be charged a fee.

If you don’t need to borrow, then get paid to shop with a cashback credit card. The return on these cards isn’t as good as it once was, but it is still reasonable. The top-paying card is the Amex Platinum card. It has a annual fee but a 5% cashback rate for the first three months; the rate then falls to 1.25%.

But make sure you clear your balance in full each month, otherwise the 22.9% APR interest will quickly cost you more than you are earning in cashback.

PUBLISHERS NOTICE

 Dear Streetwise Customer,

I want to inform you of a new Facebook group Andi, a member of our staff has set up for Streetwise customers.  This group is for Streetwise customers only. It is a private members only group and we would like to invite you to join it.

Andi suggested that he would like to host a series of live online training sessions starting next week. These live sessions will cover a range of important topics from creating the right mind set for success – which will be very handy if you have to stay in isolation for weeks or months at a time! – to the many different ways to make money online from home.

Including how one man made $30,000 a month sharing untruths. Seriously.

The reason for doing these live sessions is that if you are going to be in isolation for a few weeks then that is a great time to think about your future, your future income and learn new valuable skills.

It is our way of giving back to you during this strange time and it is also a way that we can interact with our customers better. We can let you know of future products and what we are doing as a business.

Andi knows a lot about online business and making money online after making quite a bit of it through his websites and various projects. He is the perfect person to be holding live training sessions in the Facebook group… it also helps with him being the only one out of us all who actually knows how to do it!

To access these training sessions you need to join the group so please click the link below or the image above and request to join The Streetwise Private Members Only Club.

Being indoors for such a long time could have you climbing the walls and so you are going to need a healthy distraction. Something to take your mind off being imprisoned within your own four walls.

This time will be a great opportunity to learn some new life changing skills and ways to earn an income.

From what Andi has said to me, I believe the group is going to be invaluable to you. There is a lot of great stuff which he plans to share into the group. Stuff which I personally believe will make you see the internet and online businesses in a whole new light.
